Two years ago, I took the initiative to begin selling rare books online. During that time, I had visions of people buying my as quick as they could click. However, to my disappointment, things were not as simple as they seemed and here is my recap of what I learned.
After days went by, and sales still were not up to par, I begin to examine my site. My site was designed well and my marketing strategy was well planned. Maybe it is my shopping cart? So I hunkered down and begin reading all I could find regarding e-commerce shopping carts.
One thing I learned was to know what you are doing before you take the first step. It is not as simple as just choosing the first software you find. You need to research and study the different options out there so you get the one that best suites your needs
Still, how can I use my shopping cart to beef up my online sales? Well, I discovered that sometimes I would buy an item out of impulse on some stores. After some digging, I found out it is called impulse buying and it is on Internet as well. When you have an item that the buyer wants, you have to let them know what other things previous buyers bought.
Buying more than one item, the customer will be more likely to complete the sale if they are offered a discount. The more they buy, the more they save will keep the customer coming back. Some carts even allow for groups to chat and decide on buying in bulk so everyone receives the benefit.
Another way to use your cart is with an affiliate program, which allows you free or low cost advertisement. This will allow shoppers that may have known about your site view your items. Other shopping cart add-ons include: customer tracking, various payment options, etc.
There should not be any basic question the customer can have that cannot be answered on the website. The site should include information such as pictures, shipping cost, and time in transit. A very important aspect of online sales is shipping.
Once you have researched as much as you can and are still coming up short, ask for help. Professionals are available to answer any questions you may have. They have experience in the business and can guide you in the right direction.
