Computer Viruses- A Modern Day Plague

Over the past month, the number of virus infections in the United States has skyrocketed. I manage a computer repair shop in Atlanta Georgia and I’ve seen tons of virus infections over the last month, more than I’ve seen in twenty years of business.

The problem is even the best anti-virus software can’t always protect you. It’s best to be proactive, and know what to lookout for on your own. Here are some hints to help you avoid virus infection.

First off, be very, very careful with your emails. If you send me a file, and I wasn’t expecting that file, or didn’t ask for it. I won’t be opening. it.

Secondly, the websites that you visit can be problematic as well. When you’re doing google searches, be careful what website you actually are visiting, as many of these sites may have bad code on the webpage whose only purpose is to infect your computer system.

Third, it might be time to choose another web browser over Microsoft Internet Explorer. You might want to consider an alternative choice like Opera or my personal favorite Mozilla Firefox. I have found Firefox to be much more stable, and much more secure over Internet Explorer. One of the main reasons why it makes sense to use Firefox or Opera is because many viruses will not work on Firefox which is just an added level of protection for you.

Fourth, avoid illegal download websites. Many sites that promote downloading illegal copies of software are much more likely to have virus infections. It’s a favorite of hackers to provide “free” copies of software so that they can inject their own custom code into your computer.

As far as virus protection software, I haven’t used a virus program in years. I find them to be a problem with the speed of my computer. By keeping good backups of data, and being very proactive of what I’m doing with my computer I’ve enjoyed a virus free existence over the last five years.

Use a little common sense, and I’m sure you’ll be able to avoid computer virus infection as well. Good luck, and happy surfing.
